The goal in blackjack is simple: get a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. Number cards count at face value, Jacks, Queens, and Kings count as 10, and Aces count as either 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand more. A first hand made up of an Ace and any 10-value card is a natural blackjack, usually paid at 3:2.
Once you've placed your bet, you're dealt two cards face up, and the dealer takes two cards with one showing. From there you choose to Hit (take another card), Stand (keep your current total and end your turn), or use one of the special moves below if your hand qualifies. Go over 21 at any point and you bust, losing the hand immediately regardless of what the dealer does afterwards.
If your first two cards are a pair, you can usually split them into two separate hands, matching your original bet on the second hand and playing each independently. Doubling down lets you double your bet in exchange for exactly one more card, typically offered when your total is 9 through 11. If the dealer's face-up card is an Ace, you may be offered insurance - a side bet, usually half your original stake, that pays out if the dealer does have blackjack.
The dealer has no choices to make - house rules fix their play completely, typically hitting on 16 or less and standing on 17 or more. If the dealer busts, every remaining player hand wins automatically; otherwise whoever is closer to 21 without going over takes the hand, and matching totals push (a tie, with your stake returned).
